A shorter address needs a longer plan.
A shortlink is an address that leads somewhere else, often through an HTTP redirect. The short text is the visible part. Ownership, availability, and the destination policy determine whether the link remains useful over time.
Shortlink HTML URLKnow what performs the redirect
An anchor can point at a shortlink, but it does not create that shortlink’s redirect behavior. A redirect needs to be configured in the responsible hosting or routing system. A static page can explain a move or link to the next page, but it should not be confused with an HTTP 301 or 302 response. Inspect the actual response when the distinction matters.
Match the status to the intention
Permanent and temporary redirects communicate different intentions. Choose based on whether the resource has moved for good or is temporarily available elsewhere, then verify that the hosting configuration returns the expected status and Location header. Avoid chains when you can send the old address directly to its intended destination. A redirect status is one part of a wider migration plan.
Treat ownership as a dependency
A printed or widely shared shortlink can outlive a campaign. Keep control of the domain, document the destination, and restrict who can change it. Review whether a service permits export or transfer before depending on it. If a link changes purpose, consider whether existing readers would reasonably expect that change.
